I pushed my changes. The package is almost ready. At least the following
remains to be done:

- documenting the GUI and JIT stuff in README.Debian and/or NEWS.Debian

- writing an appropriate changelog entry that closes all bugs fixed with
3.8

Don't hesitate to give a try to the package. I hope to upload it soon to
experimental.
