The octave binary from package version 3.6.2-5+deb7u1 is linked against
libhdf5.so.7, not libhdf5.so.6. I therefore suspect that you have an old
octave binary lying around.
Can you verify that /usr/local/bin (or any other custom directory in the
path) does not contain a stale octave binary? Also, what is the output
of "which octave" ?
