Have you guys attempted to package instrument control? It's still in betaish stage, but so is most of Octave-Forge, really. If any of you want to do it, that would be nice. Otherwise, I can attempt it myself. It might be tricky, because I think it requires some specialised Linux modules. - Jordi G. H.
