Thanks for your bug report. To clarify, since no example was given
here, this affects the statistics function when called with a row
vector or when the optional DIM argument is greater than 1.
A fix incorporating your patch has been applied upstream [1]. This
will be included in the upcoming 3.8.2 upstream release of Octave.
