I worked around the problem by removing libatlas3-base:

zamar at meripeto:~/work/admin$ sudo apt-get remove libatlas3-base
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libatlas3-base
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 11.0 MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
(Reading database ... 444020 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing libatlas3-base (3.10.2-4) ...

update-alternatives: using /usr/lib/lapack/liblapack.so.3 to provide
/usr/lib/liblapack.so.3 (liblapack.so.3) in auto mode

Setting up octave (3.8.2-3) ...
Processing triggers for menu (2.1.47) ...
Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.19-12) ...

So, it's only a minor issue in the upgrade process... But if possible,
please fix it to save the trouble from the others.
