It would be a nice improvement but will require some work upstream. For
now, the path to the Java runtime is detected and compiled into the
Octave libraries. We set that to be /usr/lib/jvm/default-java. There is
currently no way to change the path without recompiling Octave.

I don't think there is a Debian bug tracking this, but please see
upstream bug #40111 [1] about this feature.
