Are you sure about the last part? This .octaverc sets
"defaultfigurevisibility" to "off", while the error occurs:

The image is then saved via OpenGL off-screen rendering.  When another
toolkit (gnuplot) is used, 3D graphics don't look so good...

So the solution would be to use that LD_PRELOAD for “make -C doc
manual.html”.  I guess that this can easily be tested in Debian unstable?
