As a longer term goal, I'll second that. Personally, I'd like to see
OpenMPI in unstable as soon as possible, and that would held it back
without a good reason.

Yes, we really should.

I'd also like get GROMACS [1] support OpenMPI as well. I'm in contact
with it's maintainer but this won't happen until a new GROMACS version
is released; it won't build correctly with gcc 4.x series. So I've to
have LAM/MPI and OpenMPI working together at the moment.
