This is the patch from Thiemo, ported to 1.2.8 by me. I have no clue if
everything I did there is reasonable but am quite confident. It may
apply but there are still some issues about libtool. See the whole bug
report for more information.

This might be easy to sort out but I did not find the time to dive
deeper into that yet. I'll try to get access to a MIPS machine in the
near future, so we can test the patch.
