Hi,

I have been using a self-compiled version of OpenMPI 1.4 with threads
enabled for some time now and I haven't had any issues so far (even with
MPI_THREAD_MULTIPLE). Also the Debian package with activated threading
seems to work fine.

The upstream opinion (according to the 1.4 docs at [1]) seems to be that
at least MPI_THREAD_MULTIPLE is experimental. I am not sure whether this
also applies to the FUNNELED and SERIALIZED versions. But even if that
were the case, there seems to be no configure option to enable only the
"safe" threading options.
