Are you sure it is really started ?

In a cowbuilder, I have:

   dh_auto_test -O--parallel
 fakeroot debian/rules binary
dh binary --parallel #--with autotools_dev
   dh_testroot -O--parallel
   dh_prep -O--parallel
   dh_auto_install -O--parallel
