Not very surprisingly :), the maintenance release 2.8.5 that only was
going to address compiling issues under Windows ended becoming a stable
release with a bunch of features from the trunk backported into it:

Now I vote for packaging it, since it really adds new features for the
users. I have finished my changes; I only have to check that it performs
well with the gold linker and ffmpeg v0.6 since I removed the patches
for the bug fixed. However the server is not willing to accept my new
revisions. I will try later in order to see if it's a temporal hiccup:
$ git push origin master
Counting objects: 279, done.
Delta compression using up to 4 threads.
Compressing objects: 100% (133/133), done.
Writing objects: 100% (151/151), 83.99 KiB, done.
Total 151 (delta 121), reused 22 (delta 14)
fatal: Unable to create temporary file: Read-only file system
error: unpack failed: index-pack abnormal exit
[...]
! [remote rejected] master -> master (n/a (unpacker error))
