You're using the Sun proprietary virtual machine, which of course is not
supported by Debian. There are instructions below to use the free
OpenJDK virtual machine.

Try this command:
JAVACMD=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java josm
(after installing openjdk-6-jre).

This is a quite common problem with non-reparenting window managers like
awesome (and many others). See, for example, [1], which is the same bug
for OpenJDK (that should be fixed by now). Probably it's still not fixed
in Sun's Java Runtime Environment.

If you confirm that you don't have problems with OpenJDK, I'll close the
bug, since the bug is not in Josm, but in the virtual machine you're using.
