Ok.

I added a few improvements, and will upload shortly (want to also 
include one bugfix from upstream VCS).

Sounds good with me: I shall do my best to let you work on it first. :-)

Hope you don't mind my working on it this time around.  I am fine acting 
more as a mentor in the future, but right now I just want it in good 
shape before the freeze, and am uncertain when during the next week that 
we might find time to discuss those improvements I had made for it.

Exactly.  Ideally none of us will disappear: I find that co-maintenance 
also keeping up the spirit so that doesn't happen :-)

Maintainer(s) get to decide what is reasonable to expose to our users. 
You are right - let's stick to stable code! Your wisdom is appreciated
