uh, i did this and got no output with or without a pipe:

copelandia[~/symfony]23:43:05$ php5 test/functional/crudTest.php
copelandia[~/symfony]23:43:06$ php5 test/functional/crudTest.php |
tee /dev/null
copelandia[~/symfony]23:43:07$

got a better example? :)
