Bug #375070 has been closed some time ago. 

However, I still get the same 'Fatal error' when trying to build 
php-simpletest on amd64.

I can avoid this error by adding something like '-d memory_limit="32M"'
to the 'exec $PHP' line in the /usr/bin/pear script.
