unfortunately etch won't be seeing "the latest cvs snapshot" of php any
time soon (ever).
if you could find the actual patch, and massage it so that it applies
against the version in etch, then i'd consider taking it the the stable
release managers if you also provided me with a justification so i don't
have to argue on your behalf :)
otherwise, you're probably best off following unstable (where the fix
will eventually make it) or a backport.
