Then AFAICS, your problem is with a bug in libgd2, not in php4-gd.  To fix
that you would need to backport libgd2 from unstable to etch or else
convince the libgd2 maintainer (and the stable release managers) that this
is an RC bug in libgd2 that should be fixed in stable.
