thanks for the pointer.  just to clarify, was this already a problem
with the 4.4.4 packages in debian before the most recent security
update, or was it a regression introduced in this update?  it seems that
afaict it's the former, and thus this problem has been around for a
while.

i spoke with the release managers via irc and they're not too keen on
letting this into etch without some serious justification and lobbying,
so it sounds like any fix will be for unstable only.

however, i'll try and put together a fix in the next couple days for you
to try, anyway.  also, is this a problem in the php5 packages as well?
