Evidently some of the recent updates fixed the problem.
Sorry when I needed pear on that box it was under the spotlight, then
once I've found a workaround I forgot about the problem.
In my aptitude log there are no php related updates back to
24/10/2007 when I tried to reinstall most of php in the hope to fix
the problem.
Just 5/1/2008 a bunch of php related upgrades got in and I had the
chance to check pear just now and it works.

Thanks for the reminder. I'd consider the problem solved. Sorry for
the delay in reporting back.
