he said that it's arguably buggy usage to begin with (i.e. creating the
empty file yourself instead of using the locking functionality provided
by libdb).  he's didn't seem totally against a patch to fix it, either,
though.  i was kinda hoping to hear from somebody at oracle about whether
or not this was considered a regression in libdb, but so far my thread[1]
remains unanswered...
