This is a bug fixed in upstream PHP over a year ago.
The bug itself got backported into Squeeze with php5 security patch
squeeze8, but it's fix has not been backported:

Should be not that hard to fix this in stable, makes a lot of my
websites unusable, so i'm still pinned at squeeze7. A fact i don't like.
