I think that the release team has a goal of two years between stable
releases and we do support oldstable for approximately one year after
the release of new stable release, so that makes it around 3+ years.

I would suggest:
a) either don't release HHVM with Debian stable if you are not confident
that you will be able to support released version for so long
b) carefully pick a version to put in stable release

We can always provide backports for new HHVM releases, but they are not
as widely used as the version in the stable release.
