[Pkg-postgresql-public] oldstable to stable upgrades

I have just become responsible for a production machine using
postgres. Sadly I currently know bugger-all about postgres.

The box is now running oldstable. I would like to know what issues
there are in upgrading to stable with respect to postgres. Feel free
to point me at docs on this.

We are currently running 7.4.7-6sarge4

If I just do a standard upgrade do I need to worry about the fact that
stable has 7.5? I note a postgres-7.4 package. Can I have both
installed and control with alternatives, or is it a matter of choosing
one or the other.

I was planning to try an upgrade in a chroot and see how that worked -
is that excessive?

thanx for any pointers. (And I hope this is the right list).
