Upstream releases are usually supported five years and change. Compare
that to the three years or so a Debian release is supported. In theory,
if we expect lenny support to expire early 2012, then the oldest
PostgreSQL version to fit into that timeframe might be 8.2, released
2006-12-05. So supporting 8.1 in lenny is indeed out, and 8.2 is very
borderline.
Btw., there is another matter that we need to think about for the
future. PostgreSQL 8.4 will probably have in-place upgrade support.
But that (probably) only works for upgrading to the next release. This
will break down if the current release pattern in Debian -- 7.4, 8.1,
8.3 -- continues. Therefore, independent of future release cycles and
so on, it would be wise to plan for having 8.4 in squeeze in any case,
even if 8.5 is released in time and is also included in squeeze.
