Ack. I was pondering if it was possible to link against a tweaked
libedit version that has "SONAME libreadline.so.6" hacked in. That
would avoid the license issue and with the advantage that it uses the
proper ld.so search path at run time.

That'd be a new package, or just an additional
/usr/lib/libedit/libedit.so in the libedit-dev package plus -L
/usr/lib/libedit.
