| Work in progress in "experimental" branch. Show stopper is building gmock at
| configure stage which is required to run tests. I'll see what I can do this

Ok. I am ok with autoconf too, but mostly in the sense that I am ok with
shell scripting...

| How exactly did you do it?

I can send you the diff, but in essence by removing / commenting-out at the
Makefile.am level, and similarly as a target in debian/rules.

Not ideal, but defensible. Not every Debian package run 'make test'.

| Not interested in PPA. IMHO everything should be done in official Debian
| repositories. Please send patches to #795841 (or to another relevant bug) if
| you have something to share.

Totally understood. I "just" needed something for a) my Travis builds off my
upstream R package (and Travis uses 14.04) and b) tests on my workstation
which (ahem, cough, cough) run 16.04.

All my packaging work is in Debian too, of course.

Would be nice to have proto3, and even nice to get gRPC !
