Good to read from you -- it is always great to be in touch with upstream.

I believe that the best way to maintain software is with upstream 
involvement. :)

Perhaps it is not lack of attention is the problem (upstream releases are 
automatically detected on PTS page [1]) but lack of manpower on our side...

Personally I have no motivation or interest to maintain protobuf (though my 
professional services may be available for hire).
I only ever did minimum necessary maintenance on protobuf which is a 
dependency of some packages from Docker ecosystem...
