OK, what you need to do in the meantime is create some GPE categories. I
think I'll clone this bug as a wishlist against gpe-expenses so that it
can handle creating the categories itself. (It's been on my TODO list
for a while).
With the original bug fixed, gpe-expenses simply offers no categories in
the Properties drop-down list. You can create categories for GPE using
other GPE applications like gpe-todo (create a new entry and click on
Categories).
With categories available, the crash should disappear without needing
changes in libqof1.
