which branch are you using for upstream? I can only find a master
branch in the git repository, but no upstream or pristine-tar:
% git branch -a
* master
remotes/origin/HEAD -> origin/master
remotes/origin/master
% git branch --track upstream remotes/origin/upstream
fatal: Not a valid object name: 'remotes/origin/upstream'.
% git branch --track pristine-tar remotes/origin/pristine-tar
fatal: Not a valid object name: 'remotes/origin/pristine-tar'.
