Er, right. The debian.diff.gz, not the patch underneath debian/patches, sadly.

I prepared this cute little Wiki page http://wiki.debian.org/pkg-scicomp that
now mentions the merge functionality. You longer lasting pkg-scicomp members
should decide for what is right. I personally feel that the merged mode saves
an incredible amount of time and people will appreciate to be directed over
their initial lerning curve by some unspoken policy combined with volunteer
technical aid where required.
