The above wasn't meant as critique on your work; I know that Atlas isn't
the easiest package. 

But *if* the 3.6 version of Atlas ships with Debian, you can't use it at
all for any serious work with bugs like the above.

I just tested Octave with 3.8 and it seems to work fine.
