The patch didn't help.  After some more investigation, I found that installing 
official i386 ruby1.8 packages fixed the test failure, and in fact if I 
rebuild ruby1.8 locally adding "-fno-strict-aliasing" to the CFLAGS, the 
rebuilt packages also fix the test failure.  So this looks like it's a bug in 
ruby with bad code violating the strict-aliasing rules.  (And you should 
probably be able to reproduce the bug if you wish by rebuilding ruby1.8 and 
installing the resulting packages.)

So I guess we should either reassign this to ruby1.8, or file a new bug and 
block this one with the new one.
