OK, I got confirmation from upstream developers on IRC.  Thanks to
Lieven Govaerts (lgo) and Daniel Rall (dlr_h).

         deprecated in java 2 and not necessarily provided by the
         newest JVMs.  does anyone know whether svn-javahl cleanly
         works on new JVMs?

         'java1-runtime'

        haven't tested that.

         be sufficient.  given that lgo claims to use it with sun java
         1.5, I figure it is.
