[Pkg-sympa-devel] Bug#639627: sympa: comes from upstream

Until now, we maintained only two versions : the current stable (6.1)
and the current unstable (6.2).
It appears that packaged versions of the software (as in Debian or
Redhat) are often late for upgrading to the latest stable. Consequently,
bug fixes can't be used in the packaged versions. for example, the bug
you just fixed is applied to the version 6.1 only.
We think it's not the best for users, so we will maintain older branches
(for now, we added 6.0 and 5.4). When packagers will submit bugs in
these versions, we will fix the bug in the packaged version, then
cascading-fix this bug in the most recent versions.
This will maintain a certain level of reliability to the packaged
versions without exhausting packagers with a race to the latest stable...

I'm still not sure about how long we should keep old versions
maintained. Our insterest is that packagers move on to newer versions in
order to speed up the process of making new (and exciting!) features
available. I'm thinking about three years for now (which means three
stable versions). This is based on the Debian model, but without any
further thinking.

If you had any advice about what is right an wrong about long term
maintenance, please feel free to answer this mail.

On a shorter term note, the bug submitted by Roberto is now fixed in the
6.0 branch. I'll tag a version tomorrow.

Regards,

David
