<h1><a name="trees">TEXMF trees</a></h1>

The following site-wide TEXMF trees would be used:

<ul>
<li>TEXMFMAIN: /usr/share/texmf/
<li>TEXMFDIST: /usr/share/{texmf-tetex,texmf-texlive}/ (order can be
configured)
<li>TEXMFSYSCONFIG: /etc/texmf
</ul>

This is the search order - either nearer to upstream's, only
TEXMFLOCAL and TEXMFMAIN are swapped:

TEXMF = {!!$TEXMFCONFIG,!!$TEXMFVAR,$TEXMFHOME,!!$TEXMFSYSCONFIG,!!$TEXMFSYSVAR,!!$TEXMFLOCAL,!!$TEXMFMAIN,!!$TEXMFDIST}

or TEXMFLOCAL comes before TEXMFSYSONFIG

TEXMF = {!!$TEXMFCONFIG,!!$TEXMFVAR,$TEXMFHOME,!!$TEXMFLOCAL,!!$TEXMFSYSCONFIG,!!$TEXMFSYSVAR,!!$TEXMFMAIN,!!$TEXMFDIST}

<h1><a name="conffiles">Configuration files</a></h1>

Most of the configurable files stay in the TEXMFDIST tree (exceptions
are of course files that are generated in Debian - updmap.cfg,
language.dat - and maybe some others). LaTeX configuration files are
collected in TEXMFDIST/tex/latex/cfg (or Debian-cfg?), together with a
README file explaining that one should put changed copies into /etc

<h4>Questions</h4>

<ul>
 <li>Order of TEXMFSYSCONFIG and TEXMFLOCAL?
 <li>TEXMFDIST/tex/latex/cfg or */debian-cfg?
 <li>What happens if a configuration file changes? What if it
 changes its syntax? Should we do nothing, only document the change,
 or disable the copy in TEXMFSYSCONFIG?
</li>
</ul>
