It looks alright, feel free to push your patch. Maybe, at the same time,
also push the changes to debian/rules to point the script to the right
linux-source package version.

you may be able to do override DEB_HOST_ARCH and at least get the
configuration re-generated for i386. Cross compiling may also work but
it's too long I have done it last and I think at that time I had an x86
machine hanging around still. Your choice, but at least compile-testing
the new configuration is the minimal QA before uploading the package.
All that said, now that multi-arch is available in unstable we should
have a look at that.
