Version: 6.0.093-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi Wichert,

I tried to use vim for editing a Zope site, but found that its support for
editing remote files still lacks:

netrw.vim has some strange limitations:

For ftp, it doesn't parse the established URL syntax (i.e.
"ftp://[user[:password]@]machine[:port]/path", but only some strange subset
like "ftp://machine[#port]/path" (note the "#"). Also, the alternative
syntaxes are quite strange ("machine path" and "machine user pass path", but
no way to specify a port).

For scp and http, appearently netrw does allow to specify a port, but this is
not really documented.

netrw lacks support for webdav ;-) (Might be implemented using cadaver).

Furthermore, it would be nice if there was some way to read directories using
netrw as well, just like it's possible to read local directories. Some kind of
enhanced explorer.vim. Some code heading in this direction is available as
http://www.zope.org/Members/zxc/vimFTPExplorer, but this doesn't use netrw,
but some Python routines, and all kind of stuff is hardcoded.

Wichert, are you aware of any work being done in this direction ? I guess this
sounds like some kind of primitive vfs layer for vim ;-). If this area is
orphaned, I would consider hacking together some stuff on my own, so please
let me know if you know of any related efforts.

Thanks,
    Gregor
