Package: vim
Version: 1:6.3-071+1
Severity: normal

Hi,

there is no possibility to use the x-11 selection in vim running under
xterm. The quotestar and quoteplus registers are not available (they are
mapped to the unnamed register), thus making the simple vim X-11 cut/paste unusable.

There are only gtk- and so versions of vim which are able to do this
x-11 selection, but they are depending on a whole bunch of other
libraries (gtk).

I guess that the problem could be solved by adding some compile flags
when building the package (compile the x-11 support in).

it's done on purpose. default vim has no X11 extension, meaning that=20
"*/+ registers are not available from vim (well, they may be, but are=20
not synched with X ones).

so if you desperately need *+ register, then vim is not what you want,=20
vim-gtk (which is the smallest one with X11 extension is). this is=20
currently what I'm using, not for gvim, I only use vim in a terminal.

We don't want vim to need X11 because it would have a dependency on the=20
X11 libs, which is bad for tiny systems.

What you need is to install vim-gtk, and adjust your alternatives if=20
needed to make vim be the vim from vim-gtk so that it has X11=20
extensions linked. The fact that you will have the gtk dependencies as=20
well doesn't seem like a very big overhead. And if still you dont want=20
to hear from gtk, you can install vim-lestiff, that has even smaller=20
dependences. We won't create a vim-x11 package.

Note for Stefano : if you use mouse=3Da you can shift+middle_click to=20
paste, so it's a non problem too.

as this is not a bug, I'll close it.
