To reproduce:
apt-get source smc
cd smc-1.9+git20120222/data/translations
vim Secret\ Maryo\ Chronicles\ template.po
\s

Then the following is printed:
:!msgfmt --statistics -o /dev/null Secret Maryo Chronicles template.po
msgfmt: error while opening "Secret" for reading: No such file or directory

shell returned 1


Expected would be:
:!msgfmt --statistics -o /dev/null Secret Maryo Chronicles template.po
0 translated messages, 432 untranslated messages.
