If you don't do it, you risk that other people are tainting it by

would be needed to be reverted and re-applied afterwards, kind of

If you release and tag it in svn first, you lock a specific version and
let other people to continue on the next version.

I can not know that as the upload was not communicated (which would not
be necessary if you tag it first and then upload it).
