  * What led up to the situation?

I installed Windows 7.

    * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

I tried to emulate several sound cards. I put Windows 7 volume to 100%.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

The volume is lower than this on my host. The difference is important.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

An equal volume between host and guest.
