Perhaps before answering this question, we should have a look at the 
Workflows links on this page:

Particularly, have a look at madduck's, as it looks fairly well thought 
out.  He has a bias against git-buildpackage (which we're free to 
ignore, of course).  I just want to make sure we're happy with whichever 
direction we're planning to head before getting started.
