So, you had indicated that you were not familiar with debian
packaging.  You probably want to start reading up here:

Take a look at the debuild from the devscripts package, which
automates all of the build steps.

Also, you may want to try proving to yourself that you can build the
package on testing or unstable before attempting the backport.
