Sorry, I meant to answer but events got the better of me. The ideas
behind the patches seem fine to me, as do the patches mostly; the only
issue I noticed is that dropping the alternatives means the packages
also need to clean up existing alternatives on upgrades, and from what
I saw in the patches that wouldn't be the case.
