Unfortunately I still can't reproduce this, instead I get other issues.

(They were partly fixed by the recent xdg-utils 1.1.2-1 update.  For the
tests I made sure that gio open/xdg-open default to your .desktop file
from post #1, and tried to open a pdf.  Here this starts wine, but ends
up in an infinite loop of restarting it, but without giving "your" error
message.  This happens both with and without quotation marks here.)

So I'd like to ask you to file a bug at https://bugs.winehq.org/ (note
the info on https://wiki.winehq.org/Bugs).

Please verify if the old .desktop file still causes problems today
(remember that we have a Debian specific patch which prevents the
creation of these general .desktop files today), and if your solution
still works.  (Of course I expect both to do so.)

If you have any uncommon system-settings that might also be noteworthy
information.

Further you might mention the other url from the ARCH user, and this bug
here.

Following that please send a mail to this bugreport starting with the
following lines (XXXXX obviously being your new bugnumber):
