OK, let me clarify:

Using the daemon together with ifupdown I can press the WLAN-button on my 
notebook to switch the wlan interface on and off. When I switch the radio on, 
i.e. when I press the WLAN-button,  the notebook connects to the AP.

This simply doesn't work without the daemon (at least I don't know how), since 
after switching the radio off wpa_supplicant stops. Switching the radio on 
again wpa_supplicant won't start again, ifupdown can't see a connection to 
the AP and hence the interface won't get up. Instead I have to manually ifup 
the interface.
