[pkg-wpa-devel] wifiroamd as a Summer of Code project

Hi,
it seems to be pretty clear that a proper wifi roaming daemon is
required. As the code is already there, in wpasupplicant, this seems to
be a nice Summer of Code project, under Debian's umbrella. Is someone
that knows the wpasupplicant code willing to mentor such a project?
A rough draft of the task assignment could be:
Based upon the existing wpasupplicant code, create a program
(wifiroamd) that will look for available accesspoints. If any
are known to the system (e.g. by guessnet or wpa- stancas
in /e/n/i, or by its own configuration file), it should
associate with that accesspoint and give control to ifupdown. It
should _not_ do any encryption, as that will be handled by
wpasuppicant within the regular ifup procedure. When the
association with the AP breaks, it should ifdown the interface
and start scanning again. It can be thought of as a ifplugd for
wireless devices.
Bonus points for an automatic upgrade from a sarge
wpa_supplicant.conf setup to a wifiroamd/ifupdown.sh setup.
So, would someone be the contact for the project? Then please add it to
http://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2006 in time (deadline for projects
is May 1st). I'd like to see someone from the pkg-wpa team to setup up,
but anyone else interested enough could coordinate that project. (I
might do it myself, but I'll be in Africa from August on, and I don't
know if my net connection will be reliable enough.)
Greetings, and happy easter, where applicable,
Joachim
