Try going through the docs. I'd suggest that you can use wpa_supplicant
manually too, if possible, to verify you can actually achieve what you want
to.
The ipw3945 driver requires additional complexities (ipw3945d, modprobe hacks)
that could well be installed sub-optimally and interfering in some way, I
don't know.
Sarge also requires extra steps. It s really not the best distribution for
using cutting edge wifi drivers dude, unless you know exactly what you are
doing.
I'd suggest starting from step 1 again, after removing all the stuff you've
furiously attempted to hack up.
