It *is* true that madwifi supports wext. I help hack on the madwifi driver, I
use 'wext' and 'madwifi' wpa_supplicant backends, they both work for me.
Quoting the wpasupplicant documentation:

Madwifi supports both the 'wext' and 'madwifi' driver backends, but 'wext' is
preferred.
</quote>
I cannot see any problem with that text, I won't change it. You have found a
problem with madwifi, then madwifi must be changed to fix your problem.
So if wext and madwifi isn't working for you, lets seek support, please may I
